Barry McCleary


Barry McCleary received his PhD and DScAgr degrees from the University of Sydney, at which he is an Adjunct Professor. His interests span enzymes and carbohydrates and how they interact in defining quality aspects and the processing of plant products including grain, fruits and biomass. McCleary has developed many analytical procedures including official AOAC/AACC/ICC methods for measurement of beta-glucan, starch, damaged starch, resistant starch, fructan, dietary fibre, available carbohydrates and alpha-amylase. He has received several prestigious awards including the Harvey Wiley Medal from AOAC International the Clive Bailey Medal from ICC and the “International Achievement Award (2014)” from the University of Sydney. McCleary was President Elect, President and Chair of the Board of AACC International (Cereals and Grains) from 2009 to 2011. In 1988, he founded Megazyme to allow commercialisation of the methods that he developed. Megazyme has won several innovation and business awards including Australian Small business of the year,1993, Irish Small Business of the year, 2013, and the Irish Laboratory Awards “Food Laboratory of the Year (2020)”. In 2021, McCleary sold Megazyme to Neogen Plc and subsequently formed a new company, FiberCarb Consultants, through which he will continue his involvement in the cereals and food industries.
